Getting Poor Low-Light Results from Insta360 X521637

sdubose99 private msg quote post Address this user
I bought a used Insta360 x5... the test showed not good photos. Dark areas are real dark compared to Ricoh Theta Z1. Is this normal? There's a setting called HDR mode, it's turned on so I expected better.

Honestly, I never liked insta360 in the Matterport ecosystem. Outside of an actual Matterport camera Ricoh’s z1 or theta x are the best 360 cameras to use ~ z1 can struggle with yellowing in some extreme lighting conditions of which I haven’t noticed as much on the theta X but the x is a newer piece of hardware

I dont like the software, but one day I droped mine off a roof from 17’ and no damage. None of my Ricohs survided a 4’ drop.

I've never used anything but Pro 1, Pro 2, Pro 3 for Matterport and never will. However, I'll add the comment that due to Zillow's clash with Matterport, I've been doing more Zillow Tours recently. I've used both the X5 and also the legacy Z1 with the zillow app. Although the X5 captures more detail, higher image resolution, the Z1's HDR still looks better that the X5 for Zillow tours. Gotta hand it to Ricoh. Z1 was first released in Februay of 2019 - SEVEN YEARS AGO - and it's still an image powerhouse. Wish I could persuade Ricoh to outdo themselves with a "Z2". I'd pay a lot for the same quality and higher resolution.

Have you tried the Insta360 with other platforms like Realsee, Zillow, etc? I'm wondering if it could be an issue with Matterport. I have had insta360's for years, currently have the x4 and x5.. no noticeable issues at all with it.

Thanks I did not. Already returned the camera, I thought the dark stuff was totally a problem with the camera images, not with the platform

I am so confused. This isn't the original topic; my previous comment now has nothing to do with the topic.

Let me address the actual original topic. I've used both the Z1 and X5 often on the Zillow Tour platform. I've gone to mostly using the Z1 because I found the X5 images too light! The opposite of @sdubose99 issue.

Z1's HDR I think is superior. However X5 is quite good. The challenge with Zillow is that the camera(s) are both controlled through the Zillow app, so it makes the settings, not the photographer. I get why they do this, to make it foolproof for agents who know nothing about photography.

I would think that Matterport's connection with Z1 and X5 would also make the exposure and HDR settings automatically. In @sdubose99 example, it looks like HDR was turned "off" on the camera, because the X5 does accomplish good HDR, like the Z1.

Before using either of these cameras with Zillow or Matterport, I would manually set them to HDR and take a couple test shots. Maybe then the X5 would be "set" to proper HDR (which the examples DEFINITELY were not) and stay this way when connecting to Matterport. Just a thought.

@Home3D Thanks for this!

@sdubose99, I have both the Theta X, Z1, and I have the x5.. I understand you already returned the camera but as time permits i'll do some testing based on @home3D recommendations and post the results in the forum.

stay tuned.

@TomSparks

Ricoh in the beginning had actually helped with the development of the Zillow 3d home tour platform ~ but, Zillow has since taken over control and development of the platform

I had a couple hours free today so I recorded a video capturing the same house with the Insta360 X5, Ricoh Theta X, and Ricoh Theta Z1 on Matterport and Realsee platforms. 6 separate tours. video will be posted as soon as editing is done with it and links to the tours coming shortly as well.
