I'm starting a new thread, since it may help readers evaluate this new device. Here are my latest scans:

Pottery Barn
https://superspl.at/view?id=d575e62d

Microsoft Redwest campus
https://superspl.at/view?id=c84335ae

Playground
https://superspl.at/view?id=1702ecc4

Fall is in the air
https://superspl.at/view?id=0df1b637

All scans were performed between 4-8 mins. I reconstructed the 3DGS on the XGRIDS LCC Cloud (think MP). Their local processing software, called LCC Studios, requires a PC + NVidia and has more settings. Having a Mac, I'll have to find a solution, possibly a Virtual Machine in the cloud.

Workflow:
- Download raw files from PortalCam
- Upload raw files to XGRIDS LCC Cloud (I'm on a trial, not sure what it'll cost once out of beta)
- After an hour or so, download PLY and import it into SuperSplat Editor for clean up
- Publish to SuperSplat gallery (from inside the editor)
- Export a local copy in .splat version for my archives

@dansmigrod if this format becomes popular, I'd suggest to create a special tag embed them in the blog.

@Tosolini Thanks for sharing! How large a space do you think is possible with PortalCam and do you have idea how much it differs from its other SLAM lidars that have 3DGS ?

@aerialpixels I don't have a definite answer for you. XGRIDS positions the PortalCam for higher visual clarity but for smaller areas than its other scanners like the K1 and L2.
The PortalCam lidar has a shorter reach and you need to walk a bit slower. So it's definitely a device that prioritizes image quality over precision. They don't say it explicitly, but I think they go after MP.

@Tosolini Thanks for the reply.
I was looking at videos and it stated that Portalcam can output USDZ and OBJ?
how do the 3d files look like? I dont expect high res, but are they any good?

@aerialpixels I don't have all the answers yet on this new device. But here is a start.

I tried to convert a 3DGS PLY to USDZ using one of the free converters online and I only got the point cloud, no colors or anything. The 3DGS PLY contains more information than traditional PLY, and normal PLY converters don't do a good job.

I saw that Kiri Engine can export to OBJ, but that's a different tool.

There is also 3DGS-To-PC but it looks complicated.

Not sure about your use case for conversion, but I assume you are looking to combine aerial views with terrestrial scans?

Now xgrids has opened the software to everyone. It's free to test and free in the basic version.

Can you send me a link to download the raw data files for the .lcc software?

I wanted to check how quickly and efficiently a finished project can be processed on my computer, and whether my hardware is suitable for this type of project, or if I should get a more powerful one!

I'd like to ask you for data for a small project and a larger one.

Of course, if possible and you have the ability and willingness to share it.

I think sharing such data will be crucial in the future, because not everyone has access to powerful computers to complete a project of the highest quality, and it could be considered a service.

P.S. I'm still having trouble buying a Portalcam in Poland. No company carries cameras! And I have to buy them in Poland for tax reasons . And xgrids hasn't responded despite my several emails.

@realwalk3d Sorry to hear of the issues in sourcing a PortalCam in Poland. I'm sure you already tried this provider.

Here are some source files for you to try.

I must have missed the announcement that the XGRIDS LCC software is now free, Anyway, I use their cloud service since I don't own a GPU and I work on Mac.

@Tosolini Hi,
Thank you very much - I'll check today and paste the results below. The application in my computer configuration allows me to set the slider to 33 million gauss, out of a possible 50 million, which already requires 24 VRAM.

What bothers me most about the gauss is the inability to set external collisions and the poor navigation and exploration interface.

I'm trying to process these gauss images into an even more compressed format and upload them to 3dvista. I'm wondering how to position external walls (barriers) so that they don't fall outside the gauss image from open projects, or through mirrors, windows, or floors on stairs.

Have you tried (for example, with the computer museum) taking pictures of the text content, for example, with a smartphone, and adding them to the project in the xgrids app to obtain high-quality text content?

@realwalk3D I haven’t tried augmenting a scan with external photos since I can’t run the LCC app on my Mac. I use their cloud service for processing which has limited settings.

For collision, SuperSplat recently announced the possibility to automate detection, but it’s not readily available on a graphic UI yet.

@Tosolini Yes, I saw a tutorial on this collision—but it's complicated and not entirely necessary. We only want external collision to prevent collisions from passing through mirrors, windows, or when scanning outdoors to set external boundaries. Here's a tutorial:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyZJbYKbr14

If you have the opportunity, take additional photos (a minimum of 20, and as many as possible with 80% coverage of the previous photo, and select them so they aren't blurry. You should also set the same parameters for each photo – so it's better to avoid using automatic settings and set them manually) – I'll always help you process the project if you have one.

@Tosolini Hi,
I've already processed the projects as a test.
This is what the project looks like in the slowest mode and at a quality of 33 million Gauss out of 50 possible. I couldn't set it higher due to the limitations of my graphics card (16VRAM) RTX 4080s.

I wonder if the quality is worse than how you processed it in the Xgrids cloud.

Just chipping in.

I have tested the online processing vs processing on my home PC (super 4070 rtx)
I only did 1 test, and that was a few months ago, so it may not be conclusive.
What I found was the online version was less sharp than the local processing with best possible settings on my hardware

@realwalk3d @aerialpixels thanks for sharing your experiences.

I usually process my scans in standard mode on the XGRIDS Cloud, extract the high def PLY and edit it in SuperPlat. For some reason, I feel that the visual quality in SuperSplat is still better than the versions you provided and processed locally. You may want to double check if my eyes are seeing it correctly

@Tosolini How do you extract high-quality .ply files from xgrids?

You know what, I'm not entirely sure what to think about the quality—sometimes it seems better in some elements, other times worse in others. Overall, it's hard to tell the difference. I took a few screenshots.

First at the top is Xgrid - at the bottom is SuperSplat - basically, apart from the colors, which you can freely saturate in each of these tools - it's difficult to see any major differences?

Supersplat seems to smooth out the Gaussian speckles in the image more.

But I've noticed that the smoothing effect causes more complex elements to become "blurred."

However, when it comes to displaying text, Supersplat produced a much better effect.

But SuperSplat is a perfect tool, and above all, it's free. It's perfect for cleaning and trimming projects with ease.

You can record videos in various formats, and they're much better quality than xgrids.

SuperSplat is white-labeled—it doesn't advertise as aggressively in the browser as xgrids.

I agree with you @Realwalk3D. There is no clear winner with quality between local and cloud processing.

My workflow with SuperSplat is the following:
- process the raw data on LCC Cloud
- download the PLY file
- navigate to the folder called iteration_100
- pick the file point_cloud.ply
- import it into SuperSplat

The other ply files have increasingly smaller size and level of detail.
Since SuperSplat can now import LCC files too, I should give it a try. Maybe there are better workflows than mine.

@Realwalk3D Thanks to your link to the collision tutorial in SuperSplat, I found the skybox feature and just tried it out in SuperSplat Studio.

Boeing Model 40B
https://superspl.at/scene/aba8c704

It's really nice. The collision failed to import in this model, but at least I learned that skyboxes work. I created mine using Gemini with a prompt asking for an equirectangular image, then converted to WEBP.

BTW I'd suggest @tomsparks to implement an embed feature in the forum for SuperSplat.

@Tosolini You know,
there are many free and paid programs where you can upload Gauss effects to Skybox.
For example, I created these projects in PlayCanvas:
https://turysta3d.pl/folwark/play/
https://turysta3d.pl/010test/
You can easily create various kinds of particle decays from Gaussians. Gauss is perfect for this .

But the same can also be done in 3dvista and others.
Do you have any other examples of raw files I could upload for processing?

Free Realsee app (you can take a panorama with your smartphone or 360 camera) and Galois M2/P4 generates cubic panoramas for free from all captured panoramas, which can be used e.g. for skyboxes or gaussian training.

@Realwalk3D I really like the model intro effect you accomplished in PlayCanvas. My understanding is that PlayCanvas needs coding knowledge though.

I've a fresh new example of raw PortalCam data for you (11GB).
