Matterport Unveils New Cloud Platform, Unlocking Ubiquitous Access To 3D Technology

SUNNYVALE, Calif. and NEW YORK, Jan. 28, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Matterport, the world leader in 3D capture technology and data, today unveiled Matterport Cloud 3.0, a subscription-based platform that puts 3D capture in the hands of businesses and individuals worldwide. The company's new cloud software platform enhances the power of Matterport's flagship Pro2 camera, and enables new users to transform panoramic and 360-degree imagery from spherical lens cameras into Matterport 3D - fully immersive 3D models.

A breakthrough in its category, these new capabilities in 3D capture are made possible by the advancements in Matterport's AI-powered image-processing technology, known as Cortex. Cortex is trained on Matterport's world-leading dataset comprising billions of 3D data points, and can construct stunning 3D models from two-dimensional images captured with spherical lens cameras, including Ricoh Theta V and Insta360™ ONE X.

This new class of cameras, which start at under $400, provides a low-cost, entry-level solution for the capture, creation and publishing of 3D experiences. Matterport Cloud 3.0 expands Matterport's ecosystem of professional 3D capture - adding to Matterport's Pro2 camera line and the Leica Geosystems BLK360 laser scanner - making its revolutionary 3D experiences accessible to a significantly wider market. The new offering is for customers who don't require the accuracy, performance and image quality of Matterport's professional products.

RJ Pittman, CEO of Matterport, stated: "Today marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Matterport, our customers, partners and service providers. With Matterport Cloud 3.0 and Cortex, we are taking an important step in our evolution to better serve new and existing customers and partners with more choices to get started and grow with 3D capture. The power of our new software platform brings us one step closer to camera ubiquity. The versatility enables us to deliver a compelling entry-level solution for simple, smaller projects, while we continue to innovate and extend our industry-leading Pro2 capture experience for professional users."

In addition to these important advancements for Matterport Cloud 3.0, the company is committed to thoughtfully opening up the platform to the broader developer community starting this year. This will bring an entirely new suite of functionality to Matterport's customers for both new and existing 3D spaces.

Pittman added: "Matterport introduced the category of 3D capture for the built environment and created a market that revolutionized the real estate and construction industries. Looking forward, our newly expanded capture ecosystem and increased focus on Matterport Cloud unlocks our strategy to accelerate innovation, and deliver new features and functionality that our customers need. This includes important third-party integrations that our customers, partners and developers have only begun to imagine."

With MP's new pricing on their camera and now the ability to create VT's with any 360 camera the bottom just fell out of the market for MSP.

So this all sounds good but it also sounds like what does this all mean or us. ???

It means that we will see even more competition. An entry price that low will encourage a lot of people to jump in. I believe in competition, but it is going to get very competitive. We will have to focus on our experience.

We can fear the future or help to shape it. Professionalism is not valued by all clients, but it is by those we prefer to work for.

Help me understand. Does this release mean that other brand cameras will be able to upload to Matterport and you don't really need a Matterport camera any longer?

Yes, look at the quality of the MP VT which was produced by Theta V (you can see the camera in the mirror) https://www.wegetaroundnetwork.com/topic/8583/page/1/matterport-eblast-to-matterport-service-providers-tues-29-jan-2019/#5. It looks great to me and will be more then acquitted for most home buyers and real estate agents. It only make since that MP will make the new software compatible with all 360 cameras to drive their revenue model.

Thanks Gary. Matterport scans have to be 6-8 feet apart or they will not align. Most other party 360 walkthroughs are much great apart than 6-8 feet. How will Matterport be able to stitch them all together?

They've developed their own very impressive algorithm which uses some form of Photogrammetry which they call Cortex which I have to say is very impressive and will be a major threat to all other VT programs currently out there. No longer will you have to follow arrows like so many other VT application use. Instead you are offered a real immersive VT experience using the MP app. The developers at MP really need commending for the development of this app.

I don't know the ins and outs of what spacing is required to use the new app or the pricing other then the price stated by Mp of $10. What that means in regards to how many VT's that covers or if you need to keep paying it to keep your models live is still something which need to be clarified. One also need to find out if you can load your VT to an iPad like the normal MP VT.

I would think that backing up your models will be much easier as most of these 360 cameras offer simple backup to your PC. I hope that Dan will come back to us with answers to all of these questions and more before he leaves the show.

I cannot find data on the accuracy of Cortex with 360 cameras. Would it be accurate enough to create marketing floor plans (not as-built detail)?

Accuracy with Cortex is 4-6%.
$10/mo is for hosting 5 Cortex spaces.

It all depends on image recognition. If it's a simple enough space and the generated 3D Mesh matches, it'll work. Also consider mix and matching scans.

Schematic Floorplans cannot be ordered (now) with Cortex scans or the Matterport Starter Plan.

Professionals will want to continue using the Pro-2.

Pro-2 resolution is 16384 x 8192
Pro-1 resolution is 8192 x 4096 (not 1:1 dpi)
Theta V / insta360 ONE X resolution is 5760*2880

In addition the 3D MESH that is generated with Cortex is good, but it is not as crisp as the MESH made with the Pro-1 and Pro-2.

As far as lowering the price for scanning. It will be much cheaper to get STARTED, but you will still have the time spent with the client on securing the shoot, billing, etc. You still have to drive to the location, and you still have to carefully scan, hide from the camera (now you cannot hide behind it), still wait for images to align (alignment success will likely vary and technique may need to shift).

With building a complete mesh without holes to prevent from 'shimmering' during transitions and making a nice dollhouse, additional scans may also be necessary.

--

Therefore, do you want to keep the Pro-2? Of course.

As Matterport's lower cost of entry inspires new portals to allow Matterport Spaces (VRBO and HomeAway is onboard already), there will be more marketplaces where quality is something that you as an MSP can creatively market your services for.

Matterport Spaces have become like photography where quality is factor to differentiate you.

Anyone knows if we can use Theta S instead of Theta V?
