I too have a concern about the NCTech iSTAR Pulsar Virtualize the world program that pays iSTAR Pulsar owners "up to $20/hour" to map the world.

"Owning the iSTAR Pulsar could make you money capturing routes for NCTech all over the world. With the freedom to choose selected routes* and when you work, becoming a Virtual Reality Virtualizer is great way to be your own boss. Its a great way to supplement your income, whether you are self-employed, freelance, an independent contractor or worker," says the NCTech website.

"Routes are based on competitive hourly rates for each country, distances travelled and running costs. All pricing is fixed and payments are made on completion of a route being uploaded and verified," says the NCTech website.

I could imagine that NCTech gets paid by Google Street View to map the world of missing spaces. If that's the case, NCTech gets paid the difference between what Google pays them and what they pay photographers.

My concern is ONLY that NCTech has made the "up to $20/Hour" public rather than disclosing this number when people buy the camera and/or register for the program.

My concern is that NCTech has created an implied ceiling on what Reality Capture Photographers (RCP) can charge Clients.

By the way, I don't have a problem with the "up to $20/Hour" per se. It's a marketplace. If they get no takers at "x" then they will decide if they want to pay more.

What are your thoughts?

P.S. I also wonder if the "up to $20/hour" will reduce iSTAR Pulsar camera sales. I say that because Reality Capture Photographers (RCPs) may believe that's the ceiling of what they can charge.

£14.95/hr in U.K. Excluding post production time, fuel costs. If you drive for 6 hrs per day that hardly covers fuel costs in U.K.

You can’t live on that. Poor model. Not sustainable.

I do also have a concern about NCTech potentially competing with Reality Capture Pros (RCPs) since NCTech control the price of the iSTAR Pulsar camera, processing and hosting.

I would not have a problem if NCTech encouraged others to set up this business model.

For example, if Google Street View is paying NCTech to map missing parts of the map, then imagine a white-label version of the NCTech app that empowered all of us to make the spread between what Google Street View is paying and what we pay our team.

I could imagine some of us would strike deals with Uber drivers, for example, whom are already driving all day. Payment might be by the mile captured (of the routes Google wants).

Essentially, it's a revenue share between NCTech and a Reality Capture Pro (and potentially a revenue share between the Reality Capture Capture Pro and a sub-contractor).

This white label business model would be win-win-win and likely result in NCTech selling more iSTAR Pulsar cameras (and processing and hosting).

That would be a better model yes.

How do NCtech know what Google needs updating/mapping? I assume they’ve got more inside info than the Live map that Google published stating where they are updating next.

It smells a bit like being an MSP whereby Matterport send you leads - I have had 2 leads in 8 months from them. Their marketing material on the Partner portal, whilst comprehensive, has not been updated for 6 months.

If there are 3 NCTech guys in my area then who wins the business? First one to accept the job? Like an Uber driver.

If NCTech want to sell cameras I think they need to support NCTechies with additional camera uses and marketing material when not on the road mapping for Google.
