Here is our latest mash-up between a Matterport OBJ and the new Facebook 3D posts, as explained by our VR designer Michael Gelon.

Currently, managing file size is a major challenge on the platform. This model barely fits the current 3MB limit on Facebook. The key to bringing complex models onto Facebook is vertex and texture reduction. Matterport models can exceed 100MB, with hundreds of individual chunks and textures. Here are some tips to deal with the data (which will require knowledge & access to 3D modelling software):

1) Isolate an interesting portion of the model
2) Join separate objects into a single object
3) Erase unimportant geometry
4) Use a mesh decimator to get vert count lower than 20,000
5) Combine and compress all textures into a texture atlas
6) On export, reduce texture resolution wherever possible
7) Compile .glb file with .jpeg textures as opposed to .png

Using these methods, it is possible to turn a raw OBJ export from Matterport into a Facebook 3D post. Good luck!

@Tosolini Congratulations on a great piece of work. It seems that FB's file size limitations are a challenge. The platform seems to be designed for low res avatar type images. Like the first Gifs. Would a 3D floorplan generated from the .obj file not have smaller file size and give a better 3D user experience on FB?

@leowanzweel You may be right that a cleaned up floorplan will likely be a better option. We wanted to test the output from MP, but the limitations are so severe that I'm not really sure it's a viable option.
