How many Matterport Cameras in the U.K.?4740

JAX1979 private msg quote post Address this user
Hi,

Was about to purchaser a Matterport Camera couple weeks and stalled at last min, thank god as new one is now out (despite me asking point blank if a new one was due out).

One of the questions i had for the UK sale chap was numbers of cameras in the UK which he would not give me an answer to.

I am expecting (and hoping) the number is relatively low as its not really exploded here like it seems to have in the States.

From what i understand, in the USA people made good money at the start as not many providers. (Good to be an early adopter. But now people are race to the bottom on fees charged as more competition.

As this is more prevalent in the USA - How are people charging now? (FYI Estate Agents over here will probably not pay for a MSP, They will rather buy the camera). Can you still do venues as a source of income?

Also anybody have an idea of camera owners in UK?

Honest piece of advice - do not buy a camera in the UK unless you have an existing demand. I would advise you to go out and try selling the service and use other MSP´s to get your production done. You´ll quickly learn that it´s incredibly hard to convert prospects, that´s not just coming from me, but also the 45 other MSP´s I know of in the UK.

If you let me know where you´re based I can tell you if there´s someone nearby. We´re in SW London and there are at least 7 other MSP´s in central London that I know of.

As far as venues go, a lot of them already have some kind of virtual tour and they are reluctant to spend money (as most of us are) on something that similar, albeit superior tech. So my short answer would be, No you can´t do venues as a source of income.

I honestly haven´t got a clue exactly how many cameras are in the UK, but my rough estimate would be between 50 and 100.

Personally I'd say there's unlimited scope for the inclusion of Matterport in every sector, you just have to find the right angle.

We will be sharing a few examples of what we're doing in different sectors over the coming months and will document how we did it so anybody who is interested in replicating what we've done can do so.

The way I see it, using Matterport for real estate is just a small part of what's possible.

@Baxter

I think you are right, estate agency (Or Real Estate) can only be bread and butter.

We have some big plans and ideas, just unsure if the public think the way we do.

After much thought, i think we will get a camera and see how it goes and look to scale up from there.

I have spoken to lot of MSP outside the US. And all of them say the same thing. Realtors don't want the technology period. The consumers loves it… I have owned a realtor company so I understand the mentality. I never had it because I was always looking for the latest and best way to market.

They firstly don't want to pay for it or don't get the value. And now I am talking about big international brands not the smaller mom and pop shops. I have personally pitched and did samples for some of the bigger names out there even on CEO level. And you do the work, but they say nice job and you keep following up. But they stick to still photography and their old ways. Or the other rubbish 360 or panning video tours because they are cheap, and cant see the ROI on their investment or understand the conversion rate they can have.

Or Matterport send them an emailer a week later, what I find very weird. Thats why I have stopped putting their email addresses into the sample models and keep agency names off them. Call me paranoid, but I know of other guys this also happened to. I have spent thousands to setup the business.

I was even asked to come and open in London, I even went there in November to go and check it out. But after talking to some MSP’s there decided against it, even all my friends in the UK said this is so awesome tech and the realtors need it. I saw some realtors in the high end market there but its the same old song.

So that is interesting, the public that sees this and loves it. I know the guys in the US are killing it in their markets.

Don't look at realtors as you bread and butter sorry to burst your bubble, but this comes from experience and I have a lot of guys on this forum that can back me up on this. You will also see MSP in you area for example that will charge for a 1000 sq ft lets say $1000.00 , a month later $800 month after that $200 , so what does that tell you? They are not making it. And that ruins the MSP’s that work professional and give their clients a total package or solution. And what they don't realise once you have dropped your price there is no comming back from that again, next step close your doors. So my advice is buy the camera and don't listen to the advice on this forum. I wish you all the luck and hope you make a success …

So basically the only solution is to get this in the customers hands and the consumer ,forcing the Agent or agency to give them the tour. That is the only way this model will ever work outside the US. And this is commin sense if you go and look at why Matterport is not selling in your area. You need to turn a want into a need...

"We have some big plans and ideas, just unsure if the public think the way we do"

We were in that position six months ago and thought, you know what, we have to create stunning examples of how this can be used to change the position from the client making the choice to the client having no choice through public expectation and demand.

Go with your gut Jax, and we're all here to help you along the way.

Interesting and honest comments thanks guys.

To give a bit more meat on the bone where i am on this, I own a number of businesses in the UK on of my main businesses is an estate agency.

I personally would never pay an MSP as commissions in the UK are sub 1% so does not leave a great deal - However buying a camera is in essence one house sale so easier to stomach.

I have other businesses and i know other industries which i believe (time will tell) actually embrace this and pay a sensible figure not just a few hundred quid.

Be really interested in seeing your offerings in coming weeks Baxter.

@JAX1979 I hope that you´ll succeed, the more demand for the market the better it is for the community of MSP´s (as long as we avoid the race to the bottom). If you have an estate agency it´s more likely to be worth it (shameless plug: contact me for floorplans, RICS compliant )

FWIW; Here are the industries we´ve worked with so far:

Property resi/comm/dev, venues, historical buildings, offshore/technical, yachts/jets/luxury cars, insurance companies, breweries, hotels/members clubs + probably a few more that I`ve forgot.

Main challenge: When the client is big enough that it´s an interesting contract, they are calculating on big numbers and never willing to commit.

@JAX1979 Looking forward to sharing it all. Hopefully it helps to shape a standardised model for MSPs of how to move into other sectors successfully.

@Gerhard Very sensible stuff. As a realtor yourself (past or present) would it persuade you to use the services of an MSP if it meant you had access to detailed analytics about individual users viewing your 3D listings?

*** Update ***

After almost a 2 month wait my camera should be with me this week.

Service already seems a sticking point with Matterport, hopefully things only get better from here.

I did find out that just 40 Matterport 2 cameras have been ordered for the UK. This does fill me with some confidence that we are not over saturated.

I am guess most of these 40 are upgrades.
