Level the Matterport Camera for every scan?3974

sliderman private msg quote post Address this user
Haven't got a MP yet but I was just wondering if you have to take the time to level it after you move to a new spot following each scan?

I know it shouldn't change much if at all but does it need to be perfectly level for every shot?

The camera does not need to be perfectly level for each scan. I believe it has a 15 degree tolerance. I do not use a level and just eyeball the camera in 2 directions and never have any problems with alignment or the final result. Some people do level the camera with a level, but I believe this is an unnecessary step that adds quite a bit of time to the process.
Just my 2 cents.

While still a newbie and not an expert, I try to keep the camera reasonably level from point but do not adjust it every move. From reading every post in my quest to learn as much as I can about scanning, the consensus seems to be that the camera is very tolerant of out of level conditions.

I use two inexpensive line levels fixed to the top back edge and right hand top edge rather than a bullseye level. If I see them getting much out of wack (bubble out of the two lines), I will level things up. If you get a camera, get a Desmond DLEv-1 and the associated Arca Swiss clamp.

Hope this helps. Concur with previous post as well.

Agreed also....use a cheap Home Depot bubble level, orienting it to every tripod leg. I typically do that every 5 scans unless there is a change in the flooring.

I'll add that I've found it to be very important to level outdoor 360 views, especially if I want a still from a 360 view to be the thumbnail fit the tour. I have it when the house looks like the leaning tower of Pisa in three thumbnail!
