Does anyone know if the scan orientation is set by GPS or by direction of the camera, etc?
The reason I ask is because we typically grab E57 files from the scans and have to rotate the point cloud to the direction we want North to face. I was just wondering if there was a trick to eliminating this step if we address it in the field.

What platform are you askimg about? If Matterport it is the second facing of the first camera position.

Hi @Meidansha,

Am I correct in thinking that you are referring to the process when starting to capture a Matterport tour that decides the orientation.

Put simply you decide what direction you want the tour to face.

Assuming a simple building like a house you would wish the tour to have the front door at the bottom, nearest part.

When you start the capture in the entrance hall you set the camera up facing into the building.

Then, for the first scan only, you rotate the camera 90 degrees to the right.

The result is that the model is correctly orientated.

To have the building facing north you point the camera north, then, for the first scan you turn it 90 degrees to the right.

Simple procedure to follow so that the minimap orientation is set conveniently for the iPad or phone screen.

The orientation of the minimap in a MP scan is set in stone by the first scan you capture. Good news, if you don't like the first scan's orientation, just delete it and do a second one.

When setting up to capture a space, assess which direction is the "longest" whether north-south or east west across the building and/or property. Since the iPad (as landscape mode) is wider than it is tall, I want the "longest" direction of the capture to align with the long width of the landscape screen. To get this, make sure to aim the Pro 2 or Pro 3 in the "long" direction of the property, when you're about to capture the first scan. If you align it precisely along the longest axis, then scan, your model will be positioned very close to the alignment of the screen and Matterport's faint measurement line grid that appears on the iPad screen. Very simple, once you've got it in your head.
