iPad M1 Pro still good enough?21635

I'm still rocking my M1 iPad pro with 16gb ram, but about to tackle a project that's just under 100k sqft. Is the M1 with 16gb memory enough? Users that have upgraded, could you see a substantial improvement in performance or alignment speeds when scanning? I'm scanning with a Pro 3. Thanks!

Sure, there is an improvement with the next generation ipads, but since you have the option to merge spaces it is not really necessary to upgrade now. I will upgrade to an iPad Pro with more RAM than 16GB. I am still scanning with an M2 iPad Pro 16GB.

More important than upgrading is storage management, delete or archive spaces that have been uploaded to the cloud and finished editing.

Hi @JasonZ,
Having used M1, M4, and The M5 versions I can say that the difference in the field is very noticeable on large capture projects.
You don’t say what kind of property you are capturing as open factory space, complex office space, and spaces with significant exterior spaces are very different projects.
The more complex the space and the especially those with exteriors with a lot of detail are the area where you will see the biggest difference.
The M5 with 16GB RAM is noticeably faster processing the sweeps as it has a much improved processor.
I also found that we had no issues with the system grinding to a halt requiring reboots etc with the M5.
Good luck with the project, if possible it would be interesting to see the finished model.

@Gladsmuir It's a 3 story public library.If the project materializes I'll definitely share. Just wanted to make sure I'm equipped properly before anything is finalized.

As @Gladsmuir commented, if ever you’re knee-deep in a large scan and suddenly notice an increase in alignment time, pause to reboot the iPad and camera. When you begin again, alignment times will be quick again. Not sure why this is, but it works and saves much time as you continue work.

As iPadOS limits any individual app to using approximately 5GB of physical memory, I cannot see how increasing overall RAM would materially improve performance.

The significantly faster performance of the M5 models appears to be driven primarily by the updated processor rather than additional memory.

Based on Apple’s historic product cycle, I would expect a further processor revision in around a year’s time.

That is a considerable amount of time to spend waiting for sweeps to process and dealing with occasional reboots when the system becomes unresponsive.

For clarity, my comments relate specifically to large-scale captures in the AEC environment and are not representative of the experience when capturing a typical suburban home.

Oliver, thanks for the AEC perspective - definitely one of the more demanding use cases. From my day-to-day Pro3 work on large projects (trade fair locations with sometimes 200.000 sqft + per model) I'd like to add the following remarks:

1| The 5GB per-app cap was true for the early M1 releases, but Apple expanded it since iPadOS 15+, so modern pro apps can request more on high-memory models. The 5GB limit is outdated.

2| Matterport actually recommends 16GB for big Pro3 jobs - surely not for fun. More RAM means fewer Capture App crashes in demanding (busy) environments and large models.

3| Apple’s newer M chips help with alignment speed and sweep processing, but in practice it is not a hard requirement for getting big spaces done.

4| I see the biggest win for reliability in detailed planning of the capture (including splitting/merging spaces) and also in local storage - archive finished jobs off the iPad matters more than jumping a generation for one project.

So I agree the newest iPads pay off for anyone doing regular very large captures, and a future revision is worth planning. But I wouldn't say an M1 iPad Pro with 16GB is "not enough," or more RAM is irrelevant - also Matterport's own guidance points the other way, and with good project and storage discipline the M1 is still very capable of handling very large scans today. Next Monday I will also challenge a 250.000 sqft scan with my M2 Pro 16GB. I’ve never had any issues except for slight slow down in alignment speed beyond 500 scans.
