You can find many discussions about scanning outdoors (which Matterport does not support), if you use the Matterport User Group Forum search box - powered by Google - to search the MUG Forum knowledge base of 17,500 posts among 2,200 topics from 1,650 Members in 62 counties.

My tips for scanning outdoors?

1. Scan outdoors LAST
2. Manage your clients expectations. "Matterport does not support outdoors. I will do my best to accomplish this."

If you are just starting out, this above is very important. You may get lucky scanning outdoors (but not know the how and why discussed in other threads). So, you don't want to go on your second shoot that includes an outdoor patio and have it fail to scan or creating 'walking-in' / 'walking-out' problems.

If you disagree with the above for Matterport Service Providers just starting out, why?

Got a Matterport Spaces scanning tip? Please start a new thread.

Best,

Dan

From my experience the most critical outdoor issue is (direct) sunlight.

Here some "early morning shoots" which made no problems at all:

We experienced also issues shooting indoors in a 360° rooftop location with a white floor where the areas directly hit by sunlight created holes in the scanning in the 3D View:

And finally a daylight shooting with outdoor area (please use highlight to reach outdoor view cause of a door issue):

I have also experienced that high levels of infra-red light due to sun exposure upsets the scanning process and creates holes in the "matrix", and even happens indoors with sunlight reflecting of floors or walls.

I have done great shots at day break and on some cloudy days, I avoid the sun outdoors it does have issues with the light.

I had the opportunity to scan a sail vessel last week. Before tourists came on board, I focused on the interior and when they left, the sun was already disappearing. So we turned on some lights and proceeded anyway. The MP HDR does really a good job.

@dansmigrod I had only a few failed scans due to the small spaces connecting corridors and bunk rooms.
I reprocessed the model multiple times as I was trying to find the right amount of dock to keep and trim. I'm still not sure if having the dock in there adds any value.
I also regret not having scanned all possible entrances connecting the upper and lower decks, regardless how steep the stairs. Good learnings for the next project.

@Tosolini

Might be fun to try duplicating the model and hen deleting the dock in the duplicate to see if you (all of us) like it even more.

@3Dwalkmethru

Greet use of Mattertags and fun to see the street at night. Inspiring for the rest of us to try that ...

I just did my first "large scale" outdoor project, and think it turned out pretty well. I still may try to tweak a few things, but considering the size of the space and amount of outdoor area I'm generally pleased. I was honestly afraid that it would come back from processing unusable, but surprisingly (to me) everything "connected" on the first try and it's very usable. This was taken over a number of early mornings: https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=xPexbWnqxXo

Take Matterport Pro Camera outdoors.

The upgrade you've been waiting for has finally arrived with 360° Views.
Capture sweeping outdoor shots to show off impressive views or surrounding areas

Add the front door as your Hero Shot to draw in viewers

Highlight unattached structures like sheds, garages, or gyms

Show off outdoor amenities such as patios, event areas or pools

360° Views are like 3D scans but they only collect visual imagery data (no depth data); therefore they are not connected to your 3D Space. They are perfect for bright sunlight and outdoors, large spaces where alignment is not necessary, or showing off the exterior of any Space. Take your viewers to these places via the Highlight Reel in your 3D Showcase.

To get started with 360° Views, simply upgrade your Capture app and follow the steps listed on our Support page. Click the link below to read more about 360 Views on our blog.

One of my first projects was this museum. The owner wanted to show the illuminated fountain and line outdoors. I tried that while you were walking outside the sky were getting darker. It was a little difficult because of the few lights, the scans couldn't properly be aligned.
