PMRE 2025: Elena Pastorius reframes business growth with “The Rocket Equation” for real estate media creators

“The bigger your rocket gets, the more fuel it burns just to lift its own weight. Growth must be engineered — not assumed.” -- Elena Pastorius, Managing Director of Narwhal Creative

Real estate photographers filled the Kaos Showroom on Tuesday, 18 November 2025, for one of the most thought-provoking sessions of the week:

Real Estate Media, The Rocket Equation, & You.

Presented by Elena Pastorius, Managing Director of Narwhal Creative, the session blended engineering logic with creative-industry realities to help real estate photographers understand the forces that accelerate - and limit - business growth.

Elena’s message was bold and refreshing: your business behaves like a rocket. Lift and thrust propel you; weight and drag slow you down. Scale happens when you intentionally reduce drag, not when you simply work harder.

How rocket science applies to real estate media

Elena opened by mapping rocket dynamics directly onto a real estate media business:

Lift = the value you provide
Thrust = your marketing, sales motion, and internal systems
Weight = overhead, equipment, payroll, subscriptions
Drag = inefficiencies, low-value clients, poor processes

Her framing helped photographers see that growth is not a mystery; it is physics. More volume means more weight. More services mean more drag. Thriving requires balancing all four forces.

The Business Model Canvas: your flight-control system

Elena then walked attendees through the Business Model Canvas - which she described as the single most useful diagnostic tool in the industry. Each of the nine sections becomes a system lever:

▸ Customer segments
▸ Value proposition
▸ Channels
▸ Customer relationships
▸ Revenue streams
▸ Key resources
▸ Key activities
▸ Key partners
▸ Cost structure

She emphasized the importance of real numbers, not tax numbers, when assessing profitability: “If you don’t know your true costs, you’re steering blind.”

Vertical versus horizontal scaling

Elena broke down two growth paths real estate photographers often blend without realizing the consequences:

Vertical scale - adding new services (video, drone, floor plans)
Horizontal scale - adding people to increase capacity

Both create new drag, new weight, and new requirements. She used real examples from Narwhal Creative’s journey - from solo operator to national operation - to illustrate how each decision affects pricing, scheduling, team management, and profitability.

Quality systems: the hidden engine of growth

Quality management was a major theme. Elena outlined the three types of quality costs:

Cost of good quality - documentation, standards, prevention
Cost of checking quality - audits and verification
Cost of bad quality - refunds, reshoots, reputational damage

The bigger your team, she explained, the more essential systems become - not to reduce creativity, but to guarantee consistency.

Contractors vs. employees: the real math

In one of the most discussed segments, Elena broke down the actual cost differences:

▸ Contractors offer flexibility, seasonal scalability, and reduced commitment
▸ Employees create consistency, predictable quality, and brand alignment

She warned that heavy contractor reliance may trigger reclassification risk depending on local regulations - and often ends up costing more for high-volume businesses.

The destination is personal

Elena closed with a reminder that each creator’s “rocket destination” is unique. Whether aiming for lifestyle freedom, multi-city expansion, or a one-person premium boutique, the right answer is the one aligned with your life - not anyone else’s.
