Thanks for the update, Dan. Honestly, I have doubts about Matterport’s direction. The capture speed just isn’t as fast as what I get with 3D Gaussian Splatting or a quick 360 photo workflow — 3DGS gives me an impressive full 3D scene in minutes, while Matterport still takes proprietary equipment and many more steps to create their 10-years old 3D mesh dollhouse. The new Defurnish feature is nice, but with tools like Nano Banana, I can now also remove objects from images instantly, for free, and with no platform restrictions. My biggest issue remains data ownership: as long as I can’t fully control or download my footage and models, it’s not ideal—especially for long-term projects. The times of cloud-lock-in are over, at least in Europe. Matterport must act to comply and give us access to the full resolution images. Users will not accept the 20% image resolution in their takeout packages. And it’s also frustrating that I can’t present demos without big Matterport logos everywhere. For client or brand-neutral showcases, that’s a real problem. Looking ahead, with open-source AI and new 3D tools moving so fast, Matterport will need to address these core issues: speed - data sovereignty - flexibility. Otherwise, I can see more professionals looking for alternatives. Curious to hear if others are seeing the same trends. |
