How to Fix Blown Out Windows with Matterport?18416

bwest360 private msg quote post Address this user
I did this Matterport today and the front windows are incredibly blown out. It was bad timing at 10am with the sun blaring in and just giant open windows. Is there anything in the future I can do to prevent this? Does marking windows in the capture app do anything?

That almost looks like lens fogging. Did the camera spend an extended time in the cold before coming into a warm home?

Nope. It is only the front windows, the rest are fine.

Firmware on the Camera up to date? Ditto with the capture App

You should ALWAYS use window markings. When you are in the dollhouse view you should be able to ‘see out’ the window, not blacked out.

I don’t know what is causing the glow in each room. Should not be there. I've worked in bright sunlit rooms a lot and it doesn't cause a glow.

As @Ghagendorf mentioned, windows should be marked.

It looks like they were not marked as they are black on the dollhouse view and usually that's not the case if they are marked.

Try to mark those and reprocess and see if its any better.

I'd also check if the camera lens are clean.

What camera did you use? @bwest360 I struggle with blown out more on the Theta Z1 compared to the Pro2. And I'm finding scanning at the end of the day produces the richest contrast scans. The sun is not friendly 😅

@GETMYVR

Pro2 lite

I was using the Pro2 Lite, do you think this is affecting the quality? I did go back and re-add in the marked windows and nothing changed. The dollhouse view is correct now, but not the quality/view out the windows. I highly doubt this could be from cleaning the camera lens.

Hi @bwest360,
As someone who gas been a full time photographer since leaving college in the 1970’s I’m willing to bet €100/$100 that it is lens flare.
It iccurs throughout your molel.
Whether this is from greasy fingers or condensation I cannot say.
Get some Zeiss or similar moist lens wipes and give the glass a good clean.
Regards
Oliver

I agree too, I am just going to make a process of cleaning the Matterport lens every time I use it.

Thanks!

Did cleaning the lenses fix the issue?

I have multiple tours with blown up windows and washed out sky and they have all been done on overcast days. Posted it on MOUG and people there did not get it. There is another recent post from somebody's else who is complaining about too much brightness.

It is something wrong with a Pro3. This is from my client's tour. I have other tours with the same problem. Also when I was testing my pro3 on arrival it did my house living room very bright while it is not. Even though all clients' tours affected have been captured with a heavy overcast weather it was quite sunny when I did my house tour.

This one repeats the same "quality" going along this huge window.

This one is about 7 meters away from the scan above.

I did not take a screen shot on a balcony behind the window, the sky there just washed out and in other tours with the same problem you cannot even see a roof on a far away building which is in white colour because sky is almost white in colour.

You can try it but I do not think it will help. Windows markings are for not letting viewers to walk through windows. It just puts a mesh instead of a marking line during processing to block transition from inside to outside and back for marked windows.

We have the same problem with our Pro2. Windows can be overblown, lights have a halo around them. Doesn't happen with each window or each light. We do clean the camera each time before we use it. It's very frustrating. It's like we need a lens hood for the Pro2 but that wouldn't work out too well in the tour.

Overcast days can often be the worst for blown out windows. That silvery tone is often much brighter thru windows than a nice blue sky or a partly cloudy.

Oh ya, I re-scanned the property after cleaning the lens and it worked like a charm. I think we don't think of the Matterport camera as a lens and more of a machine. I will be wiping down the Matterport before every shoot. It is very easy for the camera to collect dust whenever it is coming out of the bag I carry it in.

Thanks for the comments.

Hi @bwest360
Delighted that it worked for you.
I agree we tend to think of it less as a camera, but of course the same principles apply.
As the lens is so wide-angle the smudge way not be noticeable at a glance.
