Model mesh looks strange in Walkthrough: you too? How to fix?18072

Sfalco private msg quote post Address this user
When I play the walkthrough/highlight reel of my Matterport model, the mesh starts to appear strange and unstable…shapes will kind of morph as I move past objects, I’m not quite sure how else to describe it.

Does this just happen when you try to move through a space too quickly? Everything looks fine when you click through slowly, but when the walkthrough reel plays it looks like The Matrix.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thank you!

@Sfalco

Can you post a link to your Matterport space?

Dan

I would, but I’m concerned about their confidentiality concerns…I’ll try pulling a video clip of the issue to share! Thanks for helping me Dan, always appreciated!!

@Sfalco

Are you asking about:

1. outdoors?
2. indoors?
3. both?

And, which camera did you use?

Thanks,

Dan

@Sfalco

I think I know what you mean.
However that is kind of standard in Matterport.

It is a 3D "shadow" caused by a real 3D object having been scanned.
So when in walkthrough mode, (which is a blending of 2D photospheres and 3d mesh),
the 2d photosphere gets 'smeared' across a 3d mesh object.

If u scanned a statue, when u walk around it, u will see its 'shape' of the statue
being smeared /ghosted / left behind on the screen whilst the scene behind the statue is revealed.

This would be even more prominent if you had scanned transient objects like moving people,
cause they would be in the 3d mesh data, but not in the 2d photo data.

I am not sure how to work around, but you could try
1) more scan points
2) using the snip tool to delete the offending mesh

If it is what I think it is it has never been good. Matterport cameras are designed for scanning a space, not objects inside it so you will always get a bad geometry and textures for furniture and other small things. If you want them to look better I am afraid it can only be achieved with much more frequent scanning.

This has always been an issue with MP. That is why I always shoot any location in small steps. As everyone touts the ability to move 10 or 12 paces with the Pro3 your will produce the most off putting VT as you may have already observed with some of the Pro 3 VT's.

Taking this to the next level if you were to look at the VT with a headset it can even make you feel seasick . Closer scan points is always better.

@GarySnyder, I am not that familiar with virtual tour, I just have had no request for it or VT, so I have a question. If you over scan to produce a better model, can you disable some of the extra scans and still get a good model to walk thru on a virtual walk thru with some type of headset. Will the final model retain all the data and have a more complete model with less hotspot point to maneuver thru.

@Sfalco I have also noticed that this type of "movement" also appears in a virtual tour AFTER i have used the trim tool boxes. I can clearly tell that the borders of those boxes do not "move" the same way through a spade.

Thank you for this, I think my takeaway is that I should have scanned more frequently instead of trying to work as quickly as possible…because it’s such a high security space I had to have an escort everywhere, and I felt guilty taking up two of this guy’s weekends already! Lessons learned.
I think my best solution will be to find a different way to navigate. Instead of using the playthrough/highlight reel, which leads to jerky/odd visual effects, my client has requested that I use a “next” button, and showed me the Harvard University produced tour of the Giza Pyramids as an example of how he wanted their tour to look. Instead of a playthrough, it’s got a “next” button and some very polished looking Mattertags. My next mission is to figure out what the heck that button is, and how I can use one.
I spent a lot of time trying to master the basics of MPEmbed, so was disappointed when the client didn’t like the look of my embedded videos, but will just have to keep on learning things until I get it right!

P.S. my tour is shot on the Pro 3, indoor and outdoor.

When I got to over 230 scans, the capture app began to crash and it took me a day of tearing my hair out to learn that I just needed to start a new scan and request a stitch. Matterport provided the stitching service for free under the circumstances, which was nice.

Out of necessity, I have been doing most of my editing on my IPad, not sure if that’s making this harder than it needs to be?
