Matterport Digital Twin | I shot this Matterport tour outdoors in 2014 using a Matterport Pro1 3D Camera. I did it over the course of two days before the sunrise (or where the building was blocking the sunrise.)

How to Successful to SCAN Outdoors with a Matterport Pro2 3D Camera

Hi All,

Got a detached garage, a second building on the same property or a Yacht for sale?

You can successfully scan outdoors if you make sure that the Matterport Pro2 3D Camera can NOT see the sun.

For clarification:

1. Scan before sunrise
2. Scan before sunset
3. Scan when a building (or other object) blocks the Matterport Pro2 3D Camera from seeing the sun
4. Clouds do NOT block the sun (While you still may be successful, the mesh may be a mess)
5. Watch out for reflections of the sun on a building that then "sees" the Matterport Pro2 3D Camera

If you do the above, you should consider charging your client a premium. If you want to avoid the premium, offer Matterport 360 Views that still allow for outdoor views within the 3D "walk around" experience.

Note: You can also use a 360 camera - such as a Ricoh Theta Z1 - to create 360s and convert them to 3D Views, BUT that's very much of an art rather than a science.

If your budget allows, consider using a BLK360 scanner. (Private Message me if you want a source to rent BLK360 scanners.)

Here is a WGAN Forum post by @Wingman - from this WGAN Forum discussion - that describes the above in greater detail:

Also sometimes a property location can make it easier and can give you extra time.

I made this one two days ago. I started at 3:30PM with the Sunset expected to be around 5:00PM. However this property is located below a road so I could easily scan in front of this house before even the sunset. It worked exactly as it would be working indoor.

I ended up scanning everything when it was quite dark. Check the 360 view located at the back of the house. That's the only one this dark. The previous ones were done in a gazebo with its light on.

You have about 30 minutes before the Sunrise when it is already bright enough to produce good details 360s. With 50 seconds per scan, 10 seconds to move a camera and say 2-3 meters between scans you can make about 30 scans. It should cover 60-90 meters long path.

Converting Matterport 360s into 3D or using a 360 camera is also an option. But sometimes even with a lot of close by vertical features to align with like on a long verandah wrapped around a building there can be a huge misalignment. Cortex may place it right on spot but screws up an angle it is placed so verandah is going away from a building wall.

It happened to me on this Monday when I was doing local pub venues. It could be fixed with manual alignment like we have already in Android version of the capture app but until it comes to IOS using Cortex can produce bad results that you won't be able to fix.
So in the case with the pub that I did not want to screw up I brought my BLK360, removed all converted 360s and rescanned it with the BLK360. It took me one hour to do two completely sunlit verandas on two floors. One was about 30 meters long and another was 18 meters. I lost 30 minutes on this Cortex thing which simply was a waste of time at the end.

I can share the pub tour once it is approved by the client. I have done 5 pubs for them already and a lot more is coming.

@Wingman that you for the example and detailed explanation.

Got other tips for successfully doing Matterport SCANS Outdoors? Please share here.

Best,

Dan

I’ve been successfully scanning in blatant sunshine lately using 3D scan conversions. It takes a little longer but I’m getting it done!

Terrific news.

How does the "mesh" look - the transition walking from one scan to another?

Do you have an example that you can share here?

Best,

Dan

@HarlanHambright

Wow! Wow! Wow!

That’s an excellent, outdoor example.

Do you ever encounter problems with this workflow for shooting Matterport tours outdoors?

Lately the Matterport has been very compliant in these situations, much better than times of yore. When there is a misalignment, moving the camera a little will usually fix it.
