Quit job and start Matterport scanning630

Dipti private msg quote post Address this user
Hi Guys,

I am located in UAE and expecting suggestion form the experience members on my decision. Currently I am working as a Technical project manager with decent annual earning of net $80,000 . I am fascinated with matter port 3D technology and planning to quit my job and start working on this solution.
Market is good here, but not sure will I am able to earn better than my current job?
What will happen when more number of matterport photographers enters in to my market ( geographically UAE is small area)?
There are many 3D solutions are on the way ( google, apple,Intel etc). If suddenly a better and cheaper solution available in the market within a year then my business/initial investment will be at risk.

I am aware that generating business is depend on my local market and my ability. But still if you can through some light based on your experience then it will help me to decide.

Thanks in advance.
Dipti

Start doing it part time and make sure you can at least start building a business and getting a real taste of the demand before you quit your very well paying job. Esp if you are in a small market. There are many other variables to look at - look at days on the market...some markets don't need our services if their product sells quickly without them having to invest money on things like Matterport.

Hey, Dipti

I had quit my job as a software engineer and then I've started 3D photographer in South Korea. But, there was no demand than I expected. In my opinion, it's better to start doing it part time. We should capture spaces avoiding walking people so we are able to capture anywhere in the evening or weekend. Above all, most of hotels still want fantastic 2D picture and also Expedia, Agoda, Hotels.com service only 2D so we cannot upload iframe 3D sources. The market of 3D webplayer is small. But well, UAE may case by case. I think if your job is a real estate agent, it's the best.

Don't believe everything you read about shooting VT's as it's a difficult sell unless the real estate market REALLY embraces VT as that is where your market mostly will be.

I would suggest showing a few real estate companies some VT's to get their feedback. If they think it's great and can't wait to have you start shooting VT then great. Do it part time till you get your business to a point where you can afford to quite your $80k job.

But don't forget that if a real estate agent or someone else sees your making loads of money they too can buy a MP camera and then you have to deal with the competition who may drive down you price.

The other factor is that as you originally stated there's going to be other devices coming on the market in 2016 which may give anyone the capability to shoot VT's at a very reasonable price so these are all things you need to consider.

One other question you need to ask the real estate agents is what is the commission they charge. In the States where Dan is it's 6% if not more and there is plenty of margins to absorb the cost of a VT. Here in the UK it 1/2% to 1% so I found out the hard way that there is no market for VT's in the real estate market.

Good luck and feel free to ask any other questions regarding the business opportunities for shooting VT's.

Do it part time. My guess is that there is less than 2% of members on this forum that are making a full time income on Matterport alone. If you want to go full time you need to bundle your matterport service with other services like floor plans, videos etc. But that market is so saturated. Sorry dont mean to burst your bubble. Just being real

It's all about your drive to get out there and sell the hell out of it. Start doing the math to make 80k, that's a lot of property to capture. Keep the job(and benefits) until you get the business up and running. But I am also playing it safe.

I was working as IT consultant for realesate portal and quit my job to do 3D scanning services. I tried it for 4 months but didn't get good response, may be i wasn't marketing properly. When i showed demo ,there was always a WOW factor but conversion was very low. Now i have gone back to my work and doing it as part time.BTW 3 months back i visited Dubai to setup 3D scanning with a local partner and again it is not sailing as i expected. I am planning to visit in few weeks to followup on leads that i generated, happy to meet you and share my experience.

Thank you all for your genuine suggestions.Appreciate it.
As per your suggestions I would probably just do this as part time and explore the market for bit and
then make a more concrete plan on what exactly i want to do.

I agree with @GarySnyder.

The market is warming up, but most people still see Matterport and 3D scanning as Virtual Tours. Google Business view may also be slowing the uptake as they can have the Google brand behind it even if it is not as good as Matterport.

If you want to make a living out of 3D scanning, do as other suggested; start now. Even if that is just a few hours a week, you will have momentum and a base to work with when it does take off. It's like surfing, you can't just see a big wave and ride it, you have to see one forming and paddle as fast as you can to ride it.

You could always hire a camera to get some examples, then see if that makes any sales. The most important thing to do is follow up and capitalize on the interest. This can feel imposing and can be hard work, but 80-90% of your sales will come from this, only a fraction will love it and understand all the benefits to contact you for a sale.

Best of luck
