Ben Claremont's devotion to his YouTube videos is a gift to us all. I've watched many of them and have ALWAYS learned useful things. On top of that, he is very concise in conveying information, presenting in a few seconds what other YouTubers spend several minutes to communicate.

I just watched Ben's video on "what to buy in 2024" and it is packed with information, as always. Invest the time to learn as he details information about each of the cameras. He tests their performance both for 360° still panos and also 360° videos. He discusses both daylight shoots and their abilities in low light. Resolution vs. sharpness. Graininess. Chromatic aberration. Workflow. You name it, he's tested it. Must have taken him weeks to put this together.

I've used many of the eight cameras, own several of them, and have only two comments to add to his advice. First, he didn't mention one my favorite benefits of the classic Theta Z1, what Ricoh calls "Handheld HDR". I often use the Z1 because of this unique mode. I can put it on the end of an extra long selfie stick, hold it fairly steady (but not "locked" like on a tripod) and get sharp HDR shots in either JPG or raw dual-fisheye mode. To my knowledge, none of the other cameras can do this, and I use it all the time to get elevated 15' views at sites for virtual tours. Not sure how it works, maybe an on-board alignment of bracketed shots, but it's great and works in raw.

My only other add is that, as Ben states, both the Z1 and Insta360 1-inch perform very well in difficult lighting situations. However, they take very different approaches to dealing with them. The Z1 captures great HDR as raw dual-fisheye, which when enhanced through Lightroom, does an outstanding job. However the Insta 1-inch takes a different approach, capturing your choice of 3,5,7,9 bracketed images (tripod required, as it's not quick) which the Insta software blends in the desktop app into a finished HDR shot. And most important, this finished HDR shot can be Exported in DNG format, preserving a high dynamic range that can, in an additional step, be further enhanced in Lightroom. This makes for a longer workflow beyond the excellent Insta Studio app, but yields a final dynamic range (if you capture bracketed 9s) that preserves even more detail than the Z1.

We've just completed a massive 3DVista virtual tour (nearly 600 360° panos) for a cemetery. Their Mausoleum building presented the most difficult 360 shooting challenges I've encountered, with dark corridors and blazingly bright colorful stained glass windows, important to balance together. I ran extensive tests and the Insta 1-inch (at bracketed 9s) beat out the Z1 for dynamic range in this extreme situation.

But these meager two comments are all I can add to Ben's superb analysis in "Which Camera 2024". The entire WGAN membership owes a debt to Ben for his outstanding and numerous videos, courses and "extras" that can be found at Ben Claremont's library

If you're an expert wanting to maintain your edge, watch Ben. If you're a novice, watch him to ensure you spend your camera money wisely.
