Hi all,

https://support.matterport.com/s/article/Import-E57-Files?language=en_US

Anyone here with Matterport Enterprise plan? Keen to try on this new beta feature.

Thanks,
Kumar

Interesting.

I am wondering why some one would try to create a Matterport space from another system using .e57.

I assume you would need to have the 360 photos saved within the .e57.

That would mean that people who use Faro or Leica could import but they would still need the proprietory software to export the .e57.

That said both Leica and Faro have their own ways of sharing something similar to Matterport if you pay for the proprietory software.

Do you have a use case in mind @Kumar?

Indeed it is interesting.

My use case is with XGRIDS scanners especially. As SLAM scanners are the quickest to capture and for use cases like to project progress monitoring adding to that another beta feature of timeline comparison.

The TLS scanners are not a fit here.

I see.

However, at present Matterport is not doing anything with 3DGS, right?

That means you might be able to get a quick preview if you use your XGrids with 360 photos (if that is even possible). That would mean using it like a TLS anyway.

However, likely this is a step on the way to SLAM and 3DGS in Matterport. Matterport may feel like they will not be able to offer a camera capable of SLAM or 3DGS in a timely manner so is working on a way to participate iun the meantime.

@Meidansha

Matterport is not doing anything on 3DGS right now.

My take,

3D/3DGS vs Image --- Image just wins.
3D/3DGS vs image based tour --- Image based tour wins.

Matterport is one of most reliable platform to deal with large space data, so it makes sense to have this offer. I am looking at the likes of cupix in contest here.

XGRIDS with 360 photos -- yes it is possible with scanner models (K1, L2Pro) otherthan PortalCam.

I see, I see.

Quicker and lighter. Works on most hardware.

It's not exactly a game changer in that light. Perhaps it may stop some XGrids adopters from closing their Matterport accounts.

@Meidansha I agree your importing a point cloud and depending on the density of the point cloud I just don't see this as good move, why not use Autocad use the Recap module? If this is just E57 unless it has a complete photo import feature also. I read thru the saw the pano imports I am not sure if this is a reverse engineering. Then take a Realsee file and run it thru, see what happens?

@ron0987 If you could reverse engineer Realsee then what if other platforms "return fire"?!?!

It is possible to reverse engineer Matterport anyway, but it is not worth the time. Also the compression in Matterport is good. It doesn't work as smoothly when taking the data and applying it to a generic virtual tour making software.
