Matterport Digital Twin shot with Matterport Axis paired with an iPhone 13 Pro | We Get Around Network Forum Founder Dan Smigrod

Matterport Mini-Map for above

Hi All,

My impression is that the quality of this scan is excellent.

3D / stitching / see through the window (looks nice) / walk around experience / color / scan data

It also did a good job stitching on the stairs and in tight spaces.

Your thoughts?

Dan

@DanSmigrod ...Actually, not bad at all. It also helps to have a recently minted iPhone. I ordered an Axis and planned on using it as backup. However, with yearly improvements in flagship phones, do you see it eventually replacing the Pro2?

@Shakoure

Matterport Axis as a back-up to a Matterport Pro2 3D Camera sounds like a great plan.

Since we all upgrade our smartphones every 1-2 years anyway, that may seem to make more sense that buying the Matterport Pro3, Pro4, Pro5 etc. That said, it takes time for the Matterport Pro2 3D Camera to rotate.

I could imagine the the future of Matterport camera upgrades looks like this:

== > Why Matterport will Build/Sell a Leica BLK360 Clone for Less Than $7,500

Plus, the pain points I see for capture are:

1. time it takes to scan
2. cost of people to scan

It's likely that we will see much faster capture (such as 360 1-click cameras, "Helmet Cams" and autonomous capture (drone, robot).

While you are figuring out your long term strategy, a Matterport Axis as a back-up sounds like a plan.

Best,

Dan

P.S. Matterport Axis is a "consumer grade" solution for smartphone rotation. I could imagine a "commercial grade" rotator such as GeoCV rotator (RIP).

Thanks for asking.

I (just) checked the Add Ons available when shooting with:

1. Matterport Pro 3D Camera
2. Matterport Axis paired with iPhone 13 Pro shooting LiDAR

Unfortunately, Matterport MatterPak is not an Add On option when shooting with a Matterport Axis paired with iPhone 13 Pro shooting LiDAR

Best,

Dan

You might reach out to a Matterport Service Provider in your destination market to shoot or rent you a Matterport Pro2 3D Camera. If interested, please see WGAN Find a Matterport Pro Map.

@Paulo

Thanks for asking.

In this WGAN-TV Live at 5 show, Jeff Nitschke (@lilnitsch) says at about 23:15 into the show:

"As far as the capture process, I think it's going to be similar if doing the single spin with the Matterport Pro2 3D Camera and the Axis"

Is it normal for the 360 camera scans to have stitching errors shown by the Z1 here or is it due to the tripod not very leveled?

@danielslwu

This tour was shot by @tmroberts

@tmroberts

About the stitching errors in the floor, did you:

1. Did you align the wide angle lens, per Matterport instructions? (Photo or video of your setup?
2. Did you center the dot inside of the circle?

Thanks,

Dan

@DanSmigrod yes I had the wide angle lens perfectly centered and the center of the dot inside the circle. Since I only did a single scan it was set at -15 to get the dot inside of the circle.

Actually, the screenshot I took was from your 360 camera example - did the stitching problem occur due to your tipod not being very leveled?

@danielslwu I use a Manfrotto monopod for the Z1 which is very level though saying that could be the floor wasn't level or admittedly user error. I don't shoot Matterport for any purpose than internal use only - I have VERY minimal experience with Matterport.
